Motivational Monday #333: Just Below the Surface
Most conversations stay on the surface.
We ask, "How's business?"
"How's the market?"
"How was your weekend?"
There is nothing wrong with those questions, but meaningful connections usually live just below the surface.
The strongest personal & professional relationships are built when we slow down enough to ask better questions, listen with genuine curiosity & seek to understand instead of simply waiting for our turn to speak.
What if instead of asking, "How's business?" you asked:
- What's been your biggest challenge lately?
- What's one thing you're excited about right now?
- Where do you feel stuck?
- What are you working toward this year?
What if instead of hearing someone's answer and immediately relating it back to yourself, you leaned in & asked one more question?
That's often where the real conversation begins.
In our professional lives, these deeper conversations help us uncover opportunities to serve others better. We learn what keeps our clients awake at night, what goals motivate them & where they need support. We stop making assumptions & start building trust.
Personally, the same principle applies. A quick conversation about a child's soccer game might reveal a parent's desire to create more family time. A discussion about a recent vacation might uncover someone's dream of retiring near grandchildren. Just below the surface are the stories, motivations & emotions that make people who they are.
The people who build the strongest relationships are rarely the ones who talk the most. They're the ones who listen the best.
This week, challenge yourself to go one question deeper. Be present. Listen to understand. Be genuinely curious.
You may discover that the most valuable opportunities, meaningful friendships & lasting partnerships have been there all along, waiting just below the surface.
Connection starts where small talk ends.
