Motivational Monday #330: In Service of Others - The Standard that Changes Everything

Every day, we have a choice. Before the emails, the appointments, the challenges & the unexpected interruptions, we get to decide what kind of attitude we will bring into the world. We set the tone. We choose the energy. We determine whether we will simply get through the day or make an impact through it.

One of the greatest lessons in life and business is that serving others should never be reserved only for people we think deserve it. It's easy to help the kind client, encourage the supportive coworker, or go the extra mile for someone who appreciates our efforts. The real test of character comes when we encounter difficult people, challenging situations or individuals who may never fully recognize what we've done for them.

Serving others isn't about what they deserve. It's about who we choose to be.

When we decide that excellence, kindness & service are our standard, we stop allowing other people's attitudes or actions to dictate our own. We stop asking, "Have they earned my best?" & start asking, "Am I giving my best?" That shift changes everything.

The truth is that every person is fighting a battle we know little about. The frustrated customer, the impatient colleague, the person who seems ungrateful or difficult may be carrying burdens we cannot see. Extending grace & service doesn't excuse poor behavior, but it demonstrates leadership. It reflects strength, not weakness.

True leadership, wherever we are at or who we are understands that service is not transactional. It is transformational.

The most impactful people are often those who consistently choose to give more than what is expected. They make the extra phone call. They send the follow-up message. They take the time to listen. They look for ways to help without immediately calculating what they will receive in return. Over time, these seemingly small actions create trust, build relationships & leave a lasting impression.

What if we viewed going the extra mile not as something special, but as our standard?

  • When the extra mile becomes standard, the bar rises.
  • We raise our expectations of ourselves.
  • We raise the level of service we provide.
  • We raise the experience of those around us.
  • And ultimately, we raise our impact.

The beautiful thing about service is that its effects reach far beyond a single interaction. A word of encouragement can change someone's day. A thoughtful gesture can restore confidence. A moment of patience can diffuse frustration. What may seem insignificant to us may be exactly what another person needed.

Impact creates a ripple effect.

The person you encourage today may encourage someone else tomorrow. The kindness you show could inspire another person to act differently. The professionalism & positivity you bring can influence an entire team, office, or community. We often underestimate how much influence we have simply because we rarely get to see all the outcomes.

Yet they happen.

Every act of service leaves a mark.

The challenge for all of us is to stop waiting for perfect conditions. Don't wait for people to deserve your best. Don't wait for circumstances to be easier. Don't wait for appreciation before choosing excellence.

Instead, decide that service is who you are.

Decide that generosity is your standard.

Decide that integrity, kindness & going above & beyond are simply the way you operate.

Because at the end of the day, success is not measured only by what we accomplish for ourselves. It is measured by the lives we touch along the way.

When we serve others, even when it's difficult, we grow.

When we raise the bar, we rise.

When we rise, we create greater impact.

And when we create greater impact, we leave the world a little better than we found it.

That is a legacy worth pursuing every single day.
